Three pieces of advice for leading in a remote working environment:
Our CEO, Miriam Magner Flynn, offers three pieces of advice based on her recent interactions with client organisations striving to enhance their managers’ ability to lead in a remote working environment.
- Communication and Transparency:
- Regular and Clear Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with your team through various channels such as video calls, chat platforms, and emails. Regular check-ins help keep everyone aligned and informed about goals, priorities, and expectations.
- Transparency: Be transparent about the organisation’s goals, challenges, and decisions. Sharing information fosters trust and empowers team members to make informed decisions. Transparency also helps mitigate feelings of isolation that remote workers may experience.
- Empathy and Support:
- Empathy: Understand and empathise with the unique challenges remote workers may face, such as isolation, blurred work-life boundaries, and communication barriers. Actively listen to their concerns and provide emotional support when needed.
- Flexible Work Practices: Recognise that remote work requires flexibility. Accommodate different working styles and schedules whenever possible. Offer support for personal wellbeing, such as encouraging breaks, providing resources for mental health support, and promoting work-life balance.
- Clarity in Expectations and Goals:
- Clear Expectations: Clearly define roles, responsibilities, and expectations for each team member. Remote workers should understand what is expected of them and how their contributions contribute to the team’s overall goals.
- SMART Goals: Set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals to provide clarity and direction. Regularly review and adjust goals as needed to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities in a dynamic remote working environment. Regular feedback sessions can also help ensure that goals remain relevant and achievable.
